DEPUTY DIRECTOR OF MUSIC

Mark Hall BA(Hons)

Mark’s love of music began at an early age, although he undertook no formal tuition for a number of years.  He began playing the trumpet age 11 as part of the South Norfolk Youth Symphonic Band.  A proficient musician and keen sportsman, he joined the Royal Marines Band Service in 2005.  He was subsequently posted to the Royal Marines Band Portsmouth (Royal Band), visiting many countries including Dubai, Canada, Switzerland, Norway and Iraq.

Mark completed the BMus(hons) degree with the band service, and also a Master of Arts in Psychology for Musicians at Sheffield University in 2013.  He was selected to attend the Royal Marines Bandmasters’ Course in 2016, graduating as top student, and receiving the conducting award.  He then became instructor of piano at the Royal Marines School of Music in Portsmouth, where he trained some of the country’s finest young musicians.

In September 2019 Mark became a veteran, leaving the Royal Marines in order to embark on a career in teaching.  He is currently Head of Secondary Music at the Alton School, teaching music to years 7-13.

Most recently he has set up an additional composition course for GCSE and A Level students.

Away from teaching and musical performance Mark is a keen sportsman, competing in Sprint, Olympic and Ironman triathlons.
